Milestone Chemicals
Turning Complex Operations into a High-Performance Ecommerce Platform
Milestone Chemicals had never sold its products directly to the public online. The company needed more than a standard ecommerce website: it needed guidance on how its existing product data, warehouse processes, pricing rules, compliance requirements and fulfilment systems could work together online.
Working from designs supplied for the project, we provided the ecommerce expertise and technical implementation needed to turn those requirements into a practical, scalable WooCommerce platform.
The challenge
Milestone’s catalogue contained approximately 4,000 to 5,000 SKUs held within Microsoft Dynamics.
The source data used a largely flat structure. Some SKUs represented standalone products, while others needed to be grouped as variations of the same parent product. The relationships between them were not fully represented within Dynamics and had to be identified using additional naming conventions and spreadsheet data.
The product information was also spread across several sources:
- Microsoft Dynamics product records.
- Spreadsheets containing descriptions and other marketing information.
- A folder structure containing product and variation images.
- Safety Data Sheets, specification sheets and other downloadable files.
- More than 200 product categories requiring accurate mapping.
These were not simply assets to upload. Each image, document and data field needed to be connected to the correct product or variation and displayed in the appropriate location.
As a first-time ecommerce operator, Milestone also relied on us to help translate its existing business processes into online workflows. This included advising on product structure, pricing, shipping, stock management, dangerous goods and fulfilment.
Building the product catalogue
We developed a custom import process to transform Milestone’s existing records into a structured WooCommerce catalogue.
The initial importer retrieved core product data from Microsoft Dynamics. A separate spreadsheet uploader then supplemented those records with marketing content, categorisation and the information required to identify related product variations.
The import system also processed Milestone’s existing product-folder structure. Images were uploaded and assigned to the appropriate products or variations, while Safety Data Sheets, specification sheets and other documents were mapped into dedicated product fields.
This allowed thousands of records and assets to be migrated systematically rather than assembled manually within WordPress.
Custom ecommerce functionality
The store required extensive functionality beyond a standard WooCommerce implementation.
Tiered pricing
Custom pricing rules were implemented to support Milestone’s different pricing tiers and purchasing conditions.
Variation-specific galleries
Individual product variations could require their own images. We developed custom WooCommerce functionality that allowed the gallery to change according to the variation selected by the customer.
Product bundles
Some products were commonly purchased with related items, such as a spray bottle, label and nozzle.
A custom bundling system displayed these items directly on the product page, allowing customers to add the complete combination to their cart. Dynamic totals updated on the page as bundle selections changed.
Product documentation
Safety Data Sheets, specification sheets and other files were connected to the appropriate products through clearly defined fields. This supported both the customer experience and Milestone’s operational and compliance requirements.
Microsoft Dynamics integration
The website remained connected to Microsoft Dynamics after launch.
Stock continued to be managed through Milestone’s primary warehouse system, so the ecommerce platform needed to retrieve accurate inventory levels without overwhelming the database.
We developed a stock-checking and caching system that reduced unnecessary requests while keeping availability current. Stock could be checked again more frequently as quantities became lower, providing a balance between accuracy and performance.
Once an order was paid, its details were sent back into Microsoft Dynamics so Milestone’s staff could manage packing and shipping through their existing operational software.
Products classified as dangerous goods could also be restricted to click and collect rather than being offered for standard delivery.
Integration monitoring
Because the website depended on an ongoing connection with Microsoft Dynamics, we also developed custom API monitoring.
When an integration failed, the system automatically sent an email alert with information about the error. This allowed the issue to be investigated quickly and gave the team the information required to process affected tasks manually when necessary.
Performance at scale
The final website combined thousands of products with complex pricing, product variations, downloadable documentation, live stock information, custom bundles and two-way Microsoft Dynamics integration.
Despite the amount of custom functionality operating behind the scenes, the site remained highly performant.
After launch, WP Engine reviewed the platform and specifically praised its performance in light of the scale and complexity of the custom implementation.
The outcome
Milestone Chemicals gained its first direct-to-public ecommerce platform without having to abandon the systems and operational processes already supporting the business.
The completed solution:
- Converted thousands of fragmented records into a structured online catalogue.
- Connected WooCommerce with Microsoft Dynamics for stock and fulfilment.
- Supported complex products, pricing, documentation and dangerous-goods requirements.
- Reduced manual catalogue administration through custom import tools.
- Provided automated monitoring for business-critical integrations.
- Maintained strong website performance despite extensive custom functionality.
The result was not simply an online shop. It was a custom commerce engine connecting Milestone’s customers, product catalogue, warehouse and fulfilment operations.
